They will join more than 1,750 other diverse 17-24 year olds in 20 communities across America who will also be sworn in as City Year corps members that day. In Los Angeles this year, City Year corps members will work as tutors, mentors and role models to make a difference in the lives of more than 4,000 LAUSD students. He will discuss his new book “Big Citizenship: How Pragmatic Idealism Can Bring Out The Best In America”. This is a free event, no registration is required.

On Thursday, October 21 at 5 p.m. in Murdock Hall 218, MCLA is pleased to present a talk by Alan Khazei, co-founder of City Year, and founder and CEO of Be the Change, Inc.
Mr. Khazei is recognized globally as a leader in the areas of active citizenship and national service, and as social entrepreneur who has explored how to achieve social change by galvanizing popular movements and forging alliances among groups with shared interests. As co-founder of City Year, his efforts have provided opportunities for young people in cities across the United States, and in Johannesburg, South Africa, and the United Kingdom to serve their communities as mentors, tutors, and leaders young people. Through his work with Be the Change, Mr. Khazei organizes national coalitions to craft, and advocate for, innovative solutions to major national challenges.

A discussion with Mark Gerzon and Alan Khazei
Join us for a special discussion as Mark Gerzon and Alan Khazei challenge us to better the country and world by becoming more active citizens.
Mark Gerzon, president of Mediators Foundation, has designed and led trend-setting global projects for the past quarter century. His writing has influenced corporate board room decisions and military strategy, as well as Democratic and Republican policymakers on Capitol Hill. He is known for his role as designer and facilitator of the U.S. House of Representatives Bipartisan Congressional Retreats, and internationally as a mediator and leadership consultant to the United Nations Development Program and to governments in Africa and Asia.
Alan Khazei is an award-winning social entrepreneur who has dedicated his life and work to strengthening American democracy through the engagement of citizens in service and public policy. He is the founder and CEO of Be the Change, Inc., which organizes national coalitions to craft, and advocate for, bold, post-partisan solutions to major national challenges. Prior to that he was co-founder and CEO of City Year, a youth service corps that currently serves in 20 American cities, and that helped inspire the creation of AmeriCorps.
