Richard Knowlton

TO: A BIG CITIZEN

Mr. Knowlton, Chairman of The Hormel Foundation, has created an amazing legacy in Austin, MN. The Hormel Foundation is funding $1,000,000 in scholarships for graduates of Austin Public Schools and Pacelli Catholic Schools in Austin, MN to attend Riverland Community College. This commitment to creating an educated workforce to support the economic vitality of our region will impact multiple generations of residents in southern Minnesota. The scholarships will go to underrepresented students who have multiple barriers to accessing higher education. Barriers include low-income status, member of an ethnic minority, first generation college student (meaning their parents did not achieve a college degree.) In addition, students who fall within the middle 50% of the class rank will be given priority. These students are not as likely to receive scholarships as those in the top 25% of their class. Mr. Knowlton and The Hormel Foundation will change lives with these scholarships. Riverland is honored to be part of this legacy and we want to recognize Mr. Knowlton as a truly Big Citizen.

Mackenzie Bearup

TO: A BIG CITIZEN

Six years ago Mackenzie was diagnosed with a painful neurological condition called Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy. She has lived in terrible pain since developing RSD, the only way she found to get her mind off her pain was to escape into a great book. It was during this time that her doctor told her about Murphy Harpst, a treatment center for some of our countries most abused children. Murphy Harpst was hoping to open a library for the children who reside there; they had the room but few books. Mackenzie thought about how reading helped her get her mind off her pain, and hoped that books could do the same thing for these children, helping them escape their emotional, mental and physical pains and fears. She gathered up her books she no longer needed and asked friends and neighbors if they had books to donate. Soon her book drive took off. She collected and donated over 10,000 books to Murphy Harpst, filling their library to capacity. She thought if this facility needed books, maybe others did as well. Today, Mackenzie has collected over 46,000 books and provided libraries in homeless shelters in 6 states and plans to spread nationwide.

Katie Stagliano

TO: A BIG CITIZEN

Katie Stagliano is 12 years old and in the 6th grade. She is the founder of Katie’s Krops a not-for-profit organization. The idea for Katie’s Krops began when Katie was in the 3rd grade. In 2008 Katie brought home a tiny cabbage seedling from school as part of the Bonnie Plants 3rd Grade Cabbage Program. She tended to her cabbage and cared for it until it grew to an amazing 40 pounds. Knowing her cabbage was special she donated to Tri County Family Ministries a local soup kitchen where it helped to feed over 275 people. Moved by the experience of seeing how many people could benefit from the donation of fresh produce to soup kitchens, Katie decided to start vegetable gardens and donate the harvest to help feed people in need. Katie started with a garden in her backyard but knew she wanted to do more. She approached Pinewood Preparatory School, and asked if she school could start a vegetable garden on the campus and donate the harvest to feed people in need in the community. The school embraced the idea and provided the then 4th grader with a plot of land the size of a football field. A large scale garden at the school was born with the help of classmates and teachers. More gardens followed with the harvest from all being donated to local soup kitchens, a homeless shelter and families in need in the community. Katie latest garden was started at The Palmetto House, a homeless shelter/soup kitchen. The residents of the shelter help Katie with the garden that they benefit from. Katie now has numerous gardens and has donated thousands of pounds of fresh produce to organizations that help people in need. She works with a Master Gardener, Lisa Turocy, who educates and works with Katie in her gardens. She has raised tens of thousands of dollars in donation and material good for her gardens. The mission of Katie's Krops is to start and maintain vegetable gardens of all sizes, and donate the harvest to help feed people in need, as well as to assist and inspire others to do the same. Her goal is to have gardens in all 50 states. Katie’s Krop She was the winner of the first Amazing Kids ‘Launch My Dream’ contest with her dream being ‘no hungry children…it only takes a seedling’. She has won numerous grants including the ‘Disney Friends for Change’ grant. Katie has written a children’s book, “Katie’s Cabbage” that she hopes to have published soon. The story is a third grade level picture book that tell the true amazing tale of how amazing 40 pound cabbage grew into a dream that changed a little girls life and inspired gardens of hope. Katie has also designed an award winning toothbrush that teaches water conservation by telling you to turn off the water while you brush your teeth and you can save up to 8 gallons of water. The toothbrush is currently for sale under the name ‘Eco-Fly’ which is distributed by Dr. Fresh. In addition to gardening Katie plays tennis on the Pinewood Preparatory team , swims in a summer swim league with her best stroke being back, is an A student who has received the Academic Achievement Award for the past four years for having the highest grade point average in her class. Robina Suwol, Founder of California Safe Schools

TO: A BIG CITIZEN

The heartfelt work of Robina Suwol & California Safe Schools www.calisafe.org has not gone unnoticed. UTNE Magazine named Robina one of “Fifty Visionaries Who are Changing the World” Her work and the request for recognition for this prestigious award surrounds Robina ‘s groundbreaking efforts to protect the health of children and vulnerable communities through the California and the nation. The diverse coalition she founded in 1998, California Safe Schools : www.calisafe.org includes more than fifty organizations. California Safe Schools created the most stringent pesticide policy in the nation for schools at Los Angeles Unified in 1998. The policy was the first in the USA to embrace the precautionary principle and Right to Know. The success of the policy led to California legislation, Healthy Schools Act 2000, and AB 405 spearheaded by Robina Suwol and California Safe Schools which prevents Experimental Pesticides from being used on any K-12 California school campus. As a result, 6 million students, and hundreds of thousands of teachers and school employees are protected. These efforts have had enormous success in protecting health and the environment , not only in California but throughout the nation and internationally. CSS began the day a group of grade school students walked through a toxic cloud of pesticides as they headed to class. It was March of 1998, when a group of school children, about to begin their day at Sherman Oaks Elementary School , encountered a gardener in a hazardous materials suit employed by the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) which administers Sherman Oaks Elementary among its 800 schools. The gardener, unaware students were present, sprayed the herbicide Princep creating a cloud of pesticide mist students were forced to walk through in order to reach their classrooms. Several parents who had dropped off their children at the school were alarmed to witness this event. One of them was Robina Suwol, whose sons, aged six and ten, walked directly through the cloud. Later, her youngest son, Nicholas, whose asthma had been under control, experienced a severe asthma attack. Suwol’s research on a pest management web site sponsored by Cornell University revealed that a single exposure to Princep could cause tremors, convulsions, paralysis, and other symptoms. With no litigious motives, only a desire to protect students, teachers, staff and residents near school site, Robina Suwol led parents to investigate. They learned that LAUSD, the nation¢s second-largest school district, relied on an industrial approach to pest control. They learned that training for pesticide appliers at schools was uneven, and that mixtures surpassing recommended safety levels were not unknown at LAUSD. They learned that many chemical pesticides commonly used in schools have a high risk factor for growing children, with risks of cancer and learning disabilities. Because LAUSD cares for more than 800,000 students, the issue of pesticide safety at school became evident as long overdue for parent and community attention. With the support of the School Board, a committee was formed. One year to the date Nicholas became ill, California Safe Schools and LA Unified created the first policy in USA for public schools that embraced the Precautionary Principle and Parents Right to Know regarding pesticides in schools. The policy has become national and international model, and led to California law - Healthy Schools Act 2000 The passage of AB 405 (Montanez) was a perfect example of dedication. Robina worked to prevent experimental pesticides, whose health effects are unknown at California ¢s k-12 public schools with Assemblymember Montanez. It moved through the Assembly and Senate and was signed on October 6, 20005 by Governor Schwarzenegger. Robina Suwol is a tireless advocate for health and the environment, especially children. In addition to the effective work provided above, Robina Suwol has taken every opportunity to protect the most vulnerable populations. For example, Robina has been one of the most vocal concerning current EPA regulations, which state that threshold standards for chemical exposure are based on 160lb. adult male.and opposed Intentional Dosing of Pesticides for Human Experimentation Studies. These efforts and other work that Robina is undertaking always seem to be in the forefront. She is working with US EPA , AQMD & DTSC to address Air Quality and toxic issues surrounding schools, and continues to strive to see successful policies and programs created here in California to be established as Federal recommendations & legislation. As more and more discussions begin on Global Warming, Robina has testified and commented that children's health must be addressed. While all school children are vulnerable to this gap in protecting their health, kids from less affluent neighborhoods are even more vulnerable. Higher rates of air pollution from increased manufacturing, lead exposure from older lead-based paint in housing, and other factors associated with poverty create soc-called “toxic zip codes.” Kids in these areas may face an environmental health burden from their vulnerability to school site toxins. In other words, they may get sicker even faster from chemical exposures. Robina Suwol had dedicated her life to these efforts. The work of California Safe Schools is committed to filling the protection gap for all students and the larger communities associated with schools, especially children and families residing in Environmental Justice communities. Her abstracts about her work and how to implement these policies and program have been widely distributed. Since founding CSS, Suwol has achieved national and international prominence as an environmental and children’s health activist. An articulate and compelling speaker, Suwol gives frequent presentations on school safety to parents, students, school officials and legislators. She has become increasingly sought after for her testimony before legislative bodies and conferences. Suwol serves on several national boards of directors of environmental and health organizations. In addition, Suwol can be found most weekends volunteering at Health and Safety Fairs, Conferences and community events. Events produced by Robina on behalf of California Safe Schools include: “Your Life is Now” at the Skirball Cultural Center where she brought approximately 400 students who met & interacted with Congresswoman Hilda Solis, Mike Farrell, David Nahai,. Including representatives of regulatory agencies, environmental representatives, and were able to view Norman Lear’s original copy of the “Declaration of Independence ”. Additional events: 14th Amendment with Stanley Sheinbaum, and Mike Farrell, and a host of events for students which always includes their meeting and working with medical experts, scientists, government officials and environmentalists . Robina was twice recognized as aVolvo Hero Award Finalist and the recipient of the Environmental Protection Agency Region 9 - 2007 Environmental Award , the Red Cross Women of Spirit Award, 2007 US Pollution Prevention Champion , Los Angeles County Children's Leading Boldly Children's Award & South Coast Air Quality Management District's Environmental Stewardship Award, Prevention Magazine Hero, UTNE Magazine named Robina “ One of Fifty Visionaries Who are Changing the World, & 1st Amendment Coalition’s 2009 Beacon Award , and the Charles Gibbs 2009 Environmental Award. Respectfully, Donna Inglima Laguna Beach, CA.

Ashley loves to do for others and tries to make a difference in her everyday life for others!

ALICE FAYE JONES

TO: A BIG CITIZEN

Newtown is the name of a small segment of the city of Sarasota, Florida. The children of Newtown are no different than children in low-income communities everywhere. Far too often they are in shoes that don't fit, wearing shirts too small or way too large, weighted down with old, ripped backpacks, having only the smallest of pencils, never an eraser, never a nice box of crayons and always with torn shoelaces or shoes that flop along with no laces at all. Few parents wait at home with sufficient eductional backgrounds and knowledge to assist with homework and school projects due. Incomplete homework assignments are not well accepted as struggling schools and exhausted teachers attempt to raise unforgiving test scores. Someone had to step up - and someone finally did. Someone had to realize that education, tutoring assistance, job information for older teens and exposure to the actual world outside these, Sarasota's very poorest area was vital if Newtown's children had any hope at all in breaking - finally breaking - the cycle of poverty. Alice Faye Jones, born and raised in the cruel housing projects of Sarasota decided, years ago, to make a real difference in the African-American community she loves and has lived in all her life. Ms. Jones began a non-profit entitled "Brothers & Sisters Doing the Right Thing" and made the difference for the children of Newtown that no one had truly made before. In short, Ms. Jones and her enthusiastic volunteers - of all ages - older folks to college students - offer homework and tutoring every afternoon at a local county library, run a ten week summer program for young teens (three part - service, education and recreation) and tutor as well in a new summer in the parks program for Newtown's very youngest. The whole point of Alice's work is to break the cycle of poverty, to reach out to the whole community to make them aware that generations of neglect of the citizens of Newtown can be changed. She challenges everyone to care, to acknowledge the achievement gaps in the schools, the needs of the children in the area and consequently more and more businesses, organizations, churches and individuals proudly step up to right these years of wrongs. Alice is an indisputable born leader and despite our twenty year difference in age, (she is the young one of 40!), I consider her my dearest friend. Given the chance, I truly believe Alice Jones could be an example and an inspiration for the whole nation.

RM Iray Nabatoff

TO: A BIG CITIZEN

Iray’s life changed dramatically when he went to Louisiana as a Katrina volunteer. 5 years later he’s still there, still volunteering, still making a difference as the founder and Executive Director of the Community Center of St Bernard, ccstb.orgWhen he heard about the horrific destruction caused by hurricane Katrina, Iray decided to go to Louisiana and help by working for a few weeks in a relief kitchen. But as he talked with people who had lost everything -- from clothes to cars to pets to homes, and even family members -- Iray’s plans for a short stay turned into a long-term commitment. Together with local residents, he envisioned and then founded the nonprofit Community Center of St Bernard which opened its doors in January 2007 with Iray as the volunteer Executive Director. Under Iray’s guidance the Community Center has quickly grown into one of the premier recovery resource providers in the greater New Orleans area, helping hurricane survivors as well as victims of the Gulf Oil Spill. In just the past 6 months: • The Center’s Food Pantry has given out 134,211 lbs of food to 3,122 low-income individuals. • 275 senior citizens have received information about the Senior Community Service Employment Program. • Office staff have passed out 13,635 flyers, brochures and pamphlets to help families find the help they need. They've also made 2,024 referrals. • 81 people have signed up for the Community Center’s free computer classes • The Clothing Bank has been accessed 14,015 times. • 1,859 free books have been given out in the Center’s reading area. • And the Center’s media lab (internet computers, public phones, fax & copying services) has been used 4,374 times. Throughout his life, Iray has shown a personal dedication to helping those in need that is truly inspirational. Iray’s commitment to service began in 1990 when he started volunteering at The Community Kitchen in New Hampshire. Over the next 16 years he tirelessly worked to help feed those in need. Then in 2006 Iray took on a new challenge, building the Community Center of St Bernard in Louisiana from a vision into a real bricks-and-mortar facility where thousands of families get help. Iray’s story clearly shows the difference that one person can make in the lives of those around him.

Rachel Humphries

TO: A BIG CITIZEN

Rachel towers above the people she serves -- not only with her height, but also with her love and generosity. Not only is Rachel almost a foot taller than the average Montagnard refugee she helps, but she has a bigger heart, a warmer smile, and more love, care, and concern than almost anyone I know. Rachel founded Refugee Support Services more than 3 years ago to give additional and necessary support to hundreds of people who had been resettled here (courtesy of the UN and US Government and various resettlement agencies) due to extreme persecution in their homelands. What Rachel and her band of volunteers provide to these people is immeasurable. Wherever Rachel is, there is a lot of language learning, culture sharing, information disseminating, and one-on-one assistance with the details of life going on. Rachel, a former ESL teacher, is the biggest and best advocate for these new residents of our country. She is an ideal example of a BIG CITIZEN for sure!

I am a teacher of gifted students at Tropical Elementary School in Merritt Island,Florida. Seven years ago, the kids and I started a program called Canine Commandos. According to a dog trainer on Animal Planet, he stated that dogs are overlooked for adoption due to lack of training and with just minutes per day, we can improve the behaviors to improve their chances for a new home. Since community service should be part of every student's experience, we decided to train dogs in hopes of successful adoptions. Since that first year, the Commandos have grown from one school, 25 students to 16 schools and 300+ students. Last year we starting tracking our progress with hopes of a 25% adoption rate and was excited to learn we held a 50% rate. Since we have so many schools training, we now are able to provide training to two local shelters. Our goals are twofold: to increase adoption rates and provide real-life experiences for our future leaders.

Toni Heineman

TO: A BIG CITIZEN

Being shuffled from one home to the next and bounced around in the system, foster youth often struggle to trust adults. And after they "age out" of the system at 18, half are unemployed, one-third go on welfare and one-fourth become homeless. That's why Toni Heineman asked 12 fellow therapists to agree to see one foster child for free for "as long as it takes." That became A Home Within, which has since involved more than 500 young people and 400 volunteer therapists. The therapists often become the one trusting adult that can help a foster child work through the past and move into a successful adulthood. More than 20 Home Within chapters are now active nationwide, and Heineman plans to expand beyond the cities into the suburbs with a goal of 2,500 therapists by 2013
